How to replace glass in a double-pane window

Windows are an essential part of our homes. They provide light and air and act as a portal that offers a small glimpse into the outside world. You need to replace the glass when an accident happens and your double-pane window is cracked. Before you decide whether to install the new double-pane window yourself or hire a professional, you should know a few things about double-pane windows.

Structure of Double Pane Windows

Double-pane windows consist of two glass panes, which are separated layers of air that provide high insulation. Sometimes, this space is filled with gases, such as argon or krypton, for additional insulation. Sealing around the glass is a common reason to replace a double-pane window because condensation will become trapped between the panes. If the window is broken or cracked, you will want to replace the glass to ensure its safety and preserve its energy efficiency.

Step-By-Step Process to Replace Glass

Here are some of the easiest and most effective steps that are used to replace the glass of double-pane windows:

Step 1: Prepare the work area
Prepare your work area before you take any other steps. It is important to ensure a smooth and safe process when replacing window glass. Firstly, remove curtains or furniture near the window and clear the space. Then, lay a sheet of plastic over your floors for protection. Make sure the windows are opened for proper ventilation. After all these steps, gather your tools and materials and move forward with the replacement process.
Step 2: Remove broken glass
After preparing your work area, it is important to remove the broken glass carefully. Make sure that you have your safety equipment. Remove the old glass from the window. If the glass doesn’t come out easily, apply duct tape to it. Then, use your heat gun to remove the window glazing and pull the glass into one piece.
Step 3: Measure the window opening for glass replacement
First, measure your windows for the right size before buying a new glass pane. Carefully measure the height, width, and weight of the window. Order a precise replacement pane and glass that is shorter in each direction. Make sure that the pane fits properly before moving forward.
Step 4: Insert the replacement glass
After glazing the window, it’s time to insert the replacement glass. Insert the glass into the bedding. Press down the glass perimeter with the help of a putty knife, which will compress the glazing compound and bed the glass.
Step 5: Secure the glass
The next step is to secure the glass. Secure the glass in the glazing compound. Again, apply a thin layer of the glazing compound to the edge of the window frame and fix it. Use your fingers or a cloth to smooth the newly applied compound.
Step 6: Clean up
It’s time to clean up the space after securing the new replacement glass. If any glass is left on the window pane, gently remove it. Make sure the surfaces of the glazing compound are smooth. Then, proceed to clean the glass with a lint-free cloth. Also, dispose of other waste products.
Step 7: Allow the glazing compound to dry
After cleaning, it’s time to dry the glazing compound for 5 – 7 days to harden properly. Once it is fully dry, paint the glazing and any exposed wood.
Step 8: Test the window
The last step of this process is to check the replaced window glass and ensure it fits properly within the window frame. Try opening and closing the window. If it moves smoothly without any interference, you’re good to go.
