Window Measurement Tools

Measuring tape:

A small level will help you determine if the window frames are plumb.
Notepad and pen:
You’ll need to record multiple measurements, so have a notepad and pen handy.
Ladder (if needed):
You may require a sturdy ladder to ensure safe and accurate measurements.
Flashlight:
Some window openings may be dull. A flashlight can help illuminate these areas.

Steps of Measuring Window Replacement
You know you need a replacement window. Proper window measurement is critical to finding just the right fit.
Step 1: Prepare the Work Area
1. Before you start measuring, preparing the work area to ensure accurate measurements and safety is essential.
2. Clear the area around the window, such as furniture or window treatments.
3. If you’re working from a ladder, make sure it’s in the right position securely and on a level surface.
4. Open the window to gain better access to the frame.
Step 2: Measure the Width
Measure between the window frame at three different points:
- The top
- The middle
- The bottom of the opening
If your existing wood window has range jamb liners, remove those to measure the inside width of the frame. Make sure to measure from the surface of the jambs, not from the trim strips, or parting stops in the old window opening.
Step 3: Measure the Height
Start at the high point of the window stool, the surface closest to the inside, and measure to the top of the window opening. If your existing glass window has range jamb liners, remove those to measure the inside height of the frame. Again, take three measurements:
- One at the left side
- One at the center and
- One is on the right side of the window.
Step 4: Measure the Depth
Measure between the inside window trim and the outside blind stop. There must be at least 3-1/4 inches of pocket depth between these two points to accept the frame of the replacement window.
Step 5: Double Check Your Measurements
